What a West Alabama year does to a car.
Pollen, lovebugs, sap and birds all go after the finish. Here is when, and how fast to get them off.
- Spring
Pollen season
Spring tree pollen leaves Alabama cars “continuously draped with a yellow coat of pollen,” and counts climb in April as more trees release it.

Lovebug flights
Major flights run about four weeks each, around May and September. Their acidic body fluids can damage paint, so splatter should come off within a day or so.

Tree sap
Heat speeds up how sap sticks to paint, and left alone it “will eventually eat through the paint.”

Bird droppings
Droppings “act similarly to the tree sap,” shrinking and stressing the finish. Don’t let them sit for days.

How soon should lovebugs come off my car?
Within a day or so. Clemson Cooperative Extension says lovebugs “can damage paint finishes when their acidic body fluids are left on a vehicle,” and that splatter “should be removed within a day or so to prevent permanent damage.”
Is tree sap bad for paint?
Yes. John Ibbotson, chief mechanic at the Consumer Reports Auto Test Center, says: “Get the sap off as soon as possible, because it will eventually eat through the paint, especially as the days warm up.”
